Challenge

At the time of this scope, Maersk Supply Service (MSS) operated a fleet of six Canadian-flagged, locally owned Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessels. To align with the company’s global CO₂ reduction goals and set a benchmark for sustainability in the maritime sector, MSS sought pathways to decarbonize its Canadian operations.

Strategy

Angler Solutions partnered with Maersk to launch the Local Vessel Decarbonization Initiative. The strategy centered on identifying viable decarbonization technologies, aligning them with available funding programs, and creating a phased execution plan that balanced technical feasibility with operational practicality. The approach emphasized both near-term emission reductions and long-term capacity building within the regional supply chain.

Action

Angler evaluated and prioritized a suite of vessel and supporting upgrade strategies, including:

• Battery Optimization - Enhancing energy storage and efficiency through the adoption of Hybrid Battery systems.
• Hull Initiatives - Smart marine coatings to improve vessels to reduce fuel consumption.
• Biofuels - Introducing sustainable fuel alternatives to decrease carbon footprint.
• Frequency Drives - Optimizing engine operations to ensure fuel efficiency.
• Shore Power - Enabling vessels to tap into onshore electricity, minimizing the need for onboard power generation when at port.
• Capacity Building – Partnering with local academic institutions to advance training and education in sustainable marine technologies.

Outcome

The collaboration provided MSS with a clear execution strategy and identified pivotal funding opportunities to support implementation. The initiative positioned Maersk’s Canadian fleet as a leader in local vessel decarbonization, demonstrating a scalable pathway for the wider offshore supply sector to reduce emissions while fostering regional expertise and innovation.
